Recently I have been listening to the book “Hot, Flat and Crowded” on audiobook and it has really been resonating with everything I value, which I had almost forgotten I value. Ever since high school the environment has been something that has been very important to me, yet because of other concerns, inability to get meaningful work in the environmental sector in Canada, the disillusion I feel with regards to ALL GOVERNMENT’S environmental policies and the inability to affect meaningful change, I had really stopped thinking about the environment and the impact we are having on it.
After reading 1/2 of “Hot, Flat and Crowded” I am terrified and incredibly pissed off. I am terrified, as every single person on this planet should be, because we are KILLING OUR EARTH! And it’s not coming down the line in some indeterminate amount of time. It’s happening now and it’s starting to happen fast, and soon it’s going to be too late to change. I recently learned that new data indicates that ALL of the Arctic ice will be gone by 2012. Which leads to countless feedback loops that are only going to act to further heat up our planet – ie. peat moss release of CH4 and less reflection of sunlight due to non-existent ice. With the melting of the Arctic ice caps, you can and should expect that sea levels will be rising by 7m in the next 5 years. Frankly, with data like this, you couldn’t pay me to live in a house next to the ocean.
Which brings me to the pissed off part. Government’s responsibility is to take care of it’s citizens best interests, be that health care, education or forcing ppl to wear seatbelts because it’s “the law”. Most citizens of any given country are fucking idiots and act like spoiled children. Which is why it’s government’s responsiblity to take care of the stupid infants that inhabit their countries, by forcing the populace to comply to laws. Laws which should include meaningful environmental legislation. Unfortunately, governments are complaining just as much as local populations about “the economy” and “I like my car” and “I don’t want to change’ etc etc etc to the point that nothing what-so-ever has changed. I cannot abide the fact that not only individual people are sticking their heads in the sand, and thinking “if I don’t think about the problem, it’ll just go away” but that governments are doing this too. What the hell good is a strong dollar going to do a country that is submerged under 3 ft of water? How do you think owning a car is going to help you when because massive weather systems that will and have become completely unpredictable destroy your home, your food and kill your family?
I haven’t really thought about the environment much in the past 10 years, because it was so disheartening, and I’m sure there are many people out there that feel the same way. You try to affect change, but it feels like you’re just smashing your head against a wall. Prime example being cars – for 10 years I have been saying I will buy a car when they have something that is a viable alternative to gasoline, yet NOTHING! Are you seriously telling me that in the past 100 years, since the internal combustion engine was designed, we have been unable to come up with anything that is a viable alternative? We have put men on the moon, and telescopes into space yet, the techology for alternatives to gasoline is just beyond our capabilities?
Honestly, my tolerance for stupidity has reached max capacity. Governments and populations be damned. I wish I could change governmental policy in one fell swoop but alas I can not and the time for change is now. So with that doomsday thought in mind, I am planning alternative courses of action. I know many people would think that I sound like a crazed “end of days” nut-case right now, but I honestly think that everyone should be talking about this and thinking this way right now. It’s coming faster than most people imagine and when it arrives, there is only going to be the choice between it sucking a whole lot, or it being full on catastrophic. That “oh, nothing will change” mentality that the skeptics keep feeding the media is not how this is going to play out.
